I Keep Losing My Erection During Intercourse/Sex

Listen, it’s completely normal to lose your erection during sex every once in a while. I know it may seem scary or concerning, but it’s okay. I can honestly tell you, it happens to most men from time to time. Stress, fatigue, emotional statuses all play a role in our body’s ability to function as desired.

Now, if you experience ED over and over again – it might be a sign of erectile dysfunction, or ED.

The question is…why is this happening? You’re already on the right track, since you can’t solve a problem if you don’t know what’s causing it.

This is where your journey to recovery begins: identifying the underlying cause of your ED.

What Causes ED?

Erectile Dysfunction is broken down into two categories: organic and non-organic.

Organic ED is caused by a medical matter, like a health condition or the side effect of a medication. Health conditions that have been known to cause ED include diabetes, multiple sclerosis, obesity, and high blood pressure (among others). Erectile issues are also a side effect of many medications, particularly anti-depressants and treatments for bipolar disorder. Organic ED is more common in older patients and can typically be treated by a medical professional.

Non-organic ED is caused by emotional or psychological factors, like depression, stress, anxiety, or trauma. In younger men, non-organic ED can also be caused by excessive masturbation or watching too much online pornography – more on that here.

So, if you’re under 40, you’re not taking any medications, and you don’t have a serious health condition, non-organic ED could be the culprit of your erectile issues – but you’ll want to talk to a licensed sex-therapist to be certain.

How to Treat Non-Organic ED

Some men have been able to treat their non-organic ED through lifestyle changes, such as:

  • Getting more exercise, eating healthier and being more active
  • Quitting smoking and/or drinking
  • Managing stress with yoga, medication, exercise, etc.
  • Getting more sleep

Others might need a little more help overcoming non-organic ED, and that’s perfectly fine. In these cases, visiting a board-certified sex therapist like me could be highly appropriate in addressing the emotional factors behind your issue.

How Sex Therapy Helps with ED

Sex therapy provides a safe environment where you and your therapist can uncover the specific thought patterns behind your non-organic ED. Once you’ve gotten to the root of your issue, it is much easier to envision yourself overcoming it. From there, you’ll create a plan for moving past those mental hurdles and focusing on the safety and comfort of the present moment.

Sometimes, just a few sessions with a sex therapist is all someone needs to learn how to calm their mind and embrace what’s in front of them, instead of becoming occupied with recurring fears or previous experiences.

At Blue Pearl Therapeutic, we create specialized plans to help patients with various erectile issues reinvigorate their sex lives as quickly as possible. If you’re curious about how sex therapy can alleviate your ED, let’s schedule a FREE 15-minute consult today.
