When Not to Use Viagra and Other ED Medications
Viagra®, sildenafil, and tadalafil – oh my. These and other FDA-approved medications are prescribed to help gents who struggle with erectile dysfunction (ED). And while these drugs can help improve your sexual performance, there are times when you should not be taking them.
So, when should you not take prescription ED medication? Easy – when you are not (a) prescribed the medication or (b) you don’t have ED in the first place.
Recreational Use of Viagra® and Other ED Medications
Yep, it happens. Viagra® is taken as a recreational drug with the goal to prolong or enhance the sexual experience. While your heart – and desires – may be in the right place, it’s actually a big no-no.
Studies have shown that men, including younger men, are experimenting with ED medication as a way to enhance their sexual performance, reduce their refractory period (the time it takes after ejaculation to get another erection), to counteract other drugs in their system, and some have even taken it to boost their athletic performance (some studies have shown that sildenafil increased the maximum exercise capacity of mountaineers and trekkers at both altitude and at sea level).
Like any prescription medication, there’s a reason behind it not being over the counter. There are considerable risks involved in taking these medications for recreational use, without a prescription.
The Risks of Taking ED Medications Recreationally
While there may not be a lot of research yet conducted on the long-term consequences of recreationally taking ED medications, there are a good deal of general risk factors to consider.
Many list side effects ranging from headache and indigestion, abnormal vision, nausea, and dizziness to more serious ones including heart attack, stroke and priapism (a painful, long-lasting erection).
If you are taking other medications, prescription or otherwise, while recreationally taking ED medications you run the risk of complications of drug interactions. Not to mention, some of these drugs interact poorly with alcohol and – get this – grapefruit juice!
