Organic erectile dysfunction

Organic ED is the most common form of erectile dysfunction, especially for men over the age of 40. Organic here means that the problem isn’t caused by medication or psychological reasons. Typically, organic ED is the result of what’s called arteriosclerosis, or the hardening of the arteries. When your arteries become thick and stiff, they get narrow and block blood flow through the body.

When it comes to risk factors, there are a couple that are controllable. Things like:

  • Obesity
  • Lack of exercise
  • High cholesterol
  • High blood pressure
  • Cigarette smoking

Because your erections are controlled by your blood vessels, erectile dysfunction can be an early warning sign of a condition called atherosclerosis.

Erectile dysfunction and Atherosclerosis

Atherosclerosis is the medical term for the buildup of fats, cholesterol and other substances (also known as plaque) in and on your artery walls. This buildup causes arteries to narrow, restricting blood flow. See where I’m going with this? With restricted arteries, it’s harder to achieve an erection.

Mild atherosclerosis typically doesn’t showcase symptoms, as those only occur in more moderate to severe cases. Even instances of ED would point to a more moderate case of atherosclerosis. Other symptoms can include:

  • Chest pain or pressure (angina)
  • Numbness or weakness in arms and legs
  • Leg pain when walking
  • High blood pressure
  • Kidney failure

If you think you have atherosclerosis, then you should talk with a medical professional. An early diagnosis can prevent the condition from worsening into heart attacks, strokes or other medical emergencies.
