Does a Sex Therapist Help with Relationship Issues?

Does a Sex Therapist Help with Relationship Issues?

There’s never been a bigger catch-all bucket than the one for the term, “relationship issues.” That’s as big of a big kahuna there is.

When it comes to relationship issues, or road bumps, where does one (or two, as the case may be) draw the differentiating line between traditional couples counseling and sex therapy?

Sex therapists set themselves apart from traditional counseling or therapy as we can delve into the more intimate aspects of issues that may be causing some friction or trouble within a couple.

What Relationship Issues Do Sex Therapists Help With?

Much like traditional therapists, we do help couples address communication, intimacy, and emotional distance, among other things, but we also work with couples as they address life and relationship issues as they relate to sex.

As a licensed and board-certified sex therapist, I have helped couples address conflicts that relate to sexual function and intimacy. These include:

  • Infidelity
  • Sex after baby
  • ED and the implications on a couple
  • Body dysmorphia
  • Sexual traumas
  • Pain during intercourse
  • Frequency of sex
  • Disparity of sexual wants and needs between partners

The list goes on and on, but those are a few that are more common and maybe you have experienced already in your life.

Do You Need Both Couples Counseling and Sex Therapy?

Any decision as it relates to your healing process is your own, but for those who are directly asking – no, you don’t need to do both couples and sex therapy. Oftentimes, if sex therapy is the best course of action for you as a couple as you seek to address certain conflicts or issues that relate to intimacy or sex within your relationship – you can still address how those issues relate to other aspects of your lives as a couple with your sex therapist.

If you have questions about sex therapy and whether it is a good fit for you and/or you and your lovey, get in touch today. Let’s set up a quick and free 15-minute call to see if this is the best course for you.

I offer in-person and virtual sessions in Austin, Texas as well as virtual sessions for those living throughout Texas and Florida.

Here’s to a new day,

Gabriela
