3 Reasons Why You Are Having Trouble Getting an Erection
Erectile dysfunction is a very common problem, affecting around 30 million people in the United States today. And there isn’t just one type of erectile dysfunction out there. Today I wanted to talk about 3 reasons why you may have trouble getting an erection, but also to let you know there are ways to help you out.
ED isn’t just one thing. There are a couple of types that medical professionals define as ED:
Vasculogenic erectile dysfunction
This type of ED is a common type seen. Vascular ED occurs as a result of cardiovascular problems, i.e., problems with your heart and blood vessels.
Neurogenic erectile dysfunction (NED)
These are forms of ED caused by neurological conditions or diseases. It’s suspected that anywhere between 10% – 19% of ED is the result of neurological problems.
Hormonal erectile dysfunction
ED can also come about due to testosterone problems or other hormonal imbalances.
Psychogenic erectile dysfunction
This is a type of ED that can be caused by psychological or emotional problems.
There are signs you can look out for if you think you’re having erection problems:
- Trouble getting an erection
- Trouble maintaining an erection
- Having an erection not firm enough for sexual intercourse
- Low interest in sex
There can be a number of reasons for why you may be facing ED. Common causes of ED can include:
Diabetes
Erectile dysfunction is common in men with diabetes, especially those with Type 2 diabetes. High blood sugar over a long period of time can cause damage to your blood vessels, causing issues with having or maintaining an erection.
Medication
Certain medications can also affect your ability to have an erection. Things like:
- Antidepressants
- Anti-ulcer drugs
- High blood pressure medicines
- Chemotherapy
- Hormonal drugs
- Antihistamines
Psychological and/or emotional conditions
Erectile dysfunction can be caused by mental and emotional problems as well. For example:
- Depression
- Anxiety
- Stress
- Genophobia (fear of sex and/or intimacy)
- Low self-esteem
Having problems getting an erection doesn’t mean you can’t fix it. It also doesn’t mean you can’t have a fulfilling sex life in spite of erectile problems.
